About York Junior Proms

Following the success of the sell-out York Proms, the Junior Proms is a special picnic proms event curated especially for children and young people.

Being held on the afternoon of 28th July and offering accessible, fun and recognisable music performed by a professional orchestra and vocalists, it is the perfect way to introduce your children to live orchestral music or feed the passions of your budding Beethoven!

The programme will also see the performance of a special Song for York project, which is an anthem written with the help of York's school children and an accompanying music video featuring thousands of youngsters and raising money for York Inspirational Kids.

Special Guests: Jester & Smedley

For the 2025 event we are pleased to announce our main show will feature The Jester and Smedley, from The York Dungeon's award-winning "Little Peasant's Walking Tour".

Family Friendly..

Whilst the sister event, the York Proms, has always welcomed families to the York Proms, and each year welcomes around 150 children to the event, the Junior Proms is specifically aimed at our wonderful young people.

Ticket buying rules mean spaces are prioritised for children and everything from the programme to the catering is designed with children in mind.

Our Audience

So what do we mean by 'children and young people'?

The event is aimed at children who are in primary and secondary school. Children who are able to sit and watch a show and get the most out of the event, not preschoolers, toddlers and babies. Although younger siblings are more than welcome to attend, we will leave that to your discretion.

Babes in arms are free of charge but every child over the age of 2 requires a ticket. Please note, while it's possible to take a child for a walk around the gardens during the event if they are struggling to sit still, all children must be supervised by an adult at all times. Prams and push chairs must be parked in our special pram park area and not brought onto the viewing lawn.

We have ticket rules in place to ensure the ratio of children to adults mean plenty of children have the chance to come. Please see our ticket page for details.

The timing of the event is designed to sit perfectly between lunchtime - which means you're free to bring your picnic lunch and enjoy it at the event, or buy from our caterers - and teatime. The show will be over by 4pm and you can either get them home in time for tea or go into town for a family meal out.

We will have some special offers for our ticket holders if you want to continue the day in town after the event, so keep an eye out for our emails with news about special offers, discounts and recommendations.
